Hemp oil and your journey to sobriety

Hemp oil, an oil extracted from industrial hemp plants, is touted as a new solution for dealing with pain, inflammation, anxiety and sleeplessness without the common side effects associated with main stream pharmaceutical products. And the very mention of any ingestible herb, oil, elixir or – dare I say it – drug, that claims these benefits draws out an appropriate and deep caution from those recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. The primary cornerstone in addiction recovery programmatically and culturally, is the concept of dealing with the root cause of one’s problems. Which is the very antithesis of the big pharma approach to such maladies as pain, anxiety and inflammation. Big pharma’s answer for pain has forever been to numb out the entire central nervous system with opiates. Sore knee joint? Take an opiate based pain medication and voila, the pain is reduced. But, along with that comes impaired judgment, emotional detachment and reduced high cognitive functioning.

Root cause focused therapy and recovery approaches are indeed effective and necessary for addiction recovery. Whether it is full engagement in 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous or, individual guided work with a licensed therapist. Recovering addicts learn essential skills that enable dealing with life’s difficult terms and circumstances without drugs and alcohol. Can’t sleep? Breath and meditate, get a massage or do some journaling. Back pain? Do some yoga and lose some weight. These are all constructive methods for dealing with the root cause of sleeplessness and pain and many find relief and sustainable sobriety utilizing these techniques.

And yet there is no escaping pain and discomfort that comes with root canals, menstrual cramps and the other everyday realities that are part of human existence. Chronic pain, sleeplessness and anxiety sometimes persist at lower levels that can provoke irritability and discontent. Inflammation and sleeplessness can make life difficult and depression can creep in as discouraged sufferers have difficulty managing everyday life activities.

What if pain could be targeted at the peripheral nervous system leaving the central nervous system to operate unimpaired? This is where hemp oil-based solutions may have breakthrough potential for recovering addicts. Providing desired outcomes without the dangerous side effects.

How does hemp oil work?

Hemp oil is synonymous with another word/acronym you may have heard called CBD. CBD is short for cannabinoid and there are two known CBD receptors in the human body, CBD 1 and CBD 2. These receptors are present in the brain and also spread throughout the body around the spine. When interacting with CBD, these receptors modulate neurotransmitter release which prevents excessive neuronal activity calming anxiety and reducing inflammation. CBD, or hemp oil, also helps to mediate cytokine release, which reduces inflammation and pain.

Dealing with physical pain and anxiety without sobriety impacting side effects could be very good news for recovering addicts and alcoholics. Many recent studies have exposed the alarming effects of long-term use of Ibuprofen and acetaminophen – active ingredients in over the counter drugs like Advil and Tylenol. So, if hemp oil is as effective as its claims, perhaps addicts in recovery may be able to safely realize the benefits associated with oral and topical hemp oil solutions for pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, dental pain, inflammation and a whole host of other indications.

However, any behavior resembling the recovering addicts drug abusing past (like taking a pill to solve a problem) should be carefully considered with the assistance of medical professionals and advice from recovery specialists and 12 step program sponsors.
